Collide

Today was a day where my love for my children as a mom and my love for my "other" children as a teacher collided. It started last Thursday and they came crashing together this morning.

Thursday: I took the day off because Tyler woke up with a fever and had been coughing for days. I called in for a sub at 6:25, but one wasn't found until 8:30 (45 minutes after we start - thank goodness for an awesome team). Ty and I stayed home and he rested.

Friday morning: no fever. Off to school we went.

Saturday: return of the fever and I had to be the bearer of bad news and tell Ty that he wasn't going to a birthday party that afternoon.

Sunday: no fever. Whew! After feeling a bit couped up from the previous day, we decided to venture to Maple Grove for Maple Maze and Trader Joe's. We had an awesome morning. Sunday night we headed to the YMCA for swimming lessons. About 10 minutes into the lesson, Ty threw up. In the pool. It had to be closed and shocked. Home we went again.

Monday: I woke up early and went to take Ty's temperature. No fever. I thought maybe the coughing from the night before was because he swallowed water or something. He went back to sleep to for a bit and I went to get ready for work. At 6:30am I went back downstairs to wake the kids up. Once Ty was dressed he came into Sophie's room. He started coughing...and, you guessed it, he threw up. Now here is where the trouble started. I ran upstairs but was too late to request a sub online. So, I called ever sub that I could think of. Each one was busy. The office staff isn't in until 7:30am - 15 minutes before students. I had no choice. We got ready and headed to school. I cried! As a mom, I so badly wanted my little guy to just stay in jammies and rest. As a teacher, I don't like having subs, and I knew that I didn't want my 25 students sitting in class with no teacher. My heart was conflicted.

Thankfully at school a dear friend (and teacher) reminded me that my students would be okay and that my mom duties come first. I went to the office, and our darling secretary arranged for a sub to come (about 9:00am). This afternoon I brought Tyler to Urgent Care and he has bronchitis! I felt awful! Poor little guy is on strong antibiotics, but will be on the mend soon.
