ArcticScape and SFAS

Today was, by far, the coolest day that I have ever had teaching, not because of some well planned lesson, but because of a real life connection that most importantly involved newer technology.

I mentioned previously that SFAS had partnered with an arctic explorer, Jim Paulson. Mr. Paulson has had experience on treks with Will Steger to the arctic before, but was trying a solo trip to Baffin Island. He had really wanted to connect with a school and help enrich their curriculum, and communicate with students while he was traveling. Luckily, we are the school that he connected with ! Thanks to Jill Anderson, a newly retired SFAS teacher, who knew Mr. Paulson and set this up.

The past week, we have spent time learning about the arctic, the geography, the climate, animals, and people. We have also made little polar bears (idea like flat stanley) that now adorn the school.

Some things that we have learned:

*Currently there is 24 hours of sunlight a day.

*For four months in the winter the sun doesn't rise.

*The temperature is in the 30s and night, and 40-50 during the day.

*Polar bears have a harder time finding food in the summer (making is more dangerous for people).

*Baffin Island is the 5th largest island in the world.

Today we were able to skype with Mr. Paulson. All I can say is - incredible! What a charismatic guy. You can read his thoughts here.
