Sunday Stories

Today, for the first time since Christmas (terrible, I know), we went to church. My heart was happy. The kind of happy that only comes from worshiping Him.

This church holds so many memories for me. It's the church that I grew up in. The church where I attended many services surrounded by my grandparents, great-aunt, and mother. The church I was confirmed and married. The church where both our children were baptized. The church where we celebrated, through our tears, the life of my grandpa.

It was a nice feeling being at church again today. Sharing our faith. Enjoying the fellowship of our church-family.

Well, speaking of church today, it was interesting. I was so proud that both kids made it through the whole service without going to the nursery. I packed a bag with some books, paper, crayons, and fruit snacks - it worked. The kids were, for the most part, occupied, and both Jon and I were able to stay in church for the entire service. Yea!

However, there was one point, that was not such a highlight. Pastor Gade does a children's sermon each week. The kids go up front and listen to a mini-sermon. Then they pray, get a "mission", and as they return to their seat, they do their missionary work.

I got the lucky job of going up with Sophie and Tyler (note the sarcasm).

Pastor was speaking to the children about listening to Jesus, and he was trying to use a mountain analogy to make his point. Well, Miss Soph decided that she wasn't really into sitting infront of the church to listen to Pastor (no offense to him). She was getting antsy, so I whispered in her ear to go back by Dad (as Jon was still in the pew). She did, kind of. She stood up; walked up the aisle, and a few rows before our pew, she turned around, and started walking toward the front again. Once she was by me, the same thing happened. She didn't want to sit, so I said, "Go by Dad." This time she got up and started to stroll down the side aisle.

At this point, Pastor changed his children's message analogy. He used Sophie to explain to the other children about listening to Jesus. "Sometimes, even when Jesus is talking to us, we don't listen. Just like Sophie isn't listening to her mom..."

Not really a shining moment, but a comical one nonetheless. Glad that Sophie and I could help.

At bedtime I asked Tyler if he wanted say our prayers. Usually we pray "Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray the Lord my soul to keep..." Tonight, however, this was Tyler's prayer "Bless my Great-grandpa. I love him forever!"
