Today, Sophie Jean, is your first birthday!
It just amazes me how fast the time has gone by. It doesn't seem that long ago that I was going to the doctor for my 38 week checkup only to have her decide that I was going to be induced (you were big and after the complications with your brother's birth, it was best). The doctor asked me if the end of the week would be fine, and I said sure. She went to make the appropriate phone calls and came back to tell me the news. The hospital was full for inductions at the end of the week. I had to be induced that day, and she was going to follow me to the hospital to break my water.
I remember walking out to my car to call Grandma Sue. It was 12:10 pm on a Tuesday. Not only did I have to tell her what was happening, I needed her to send Grandpa Mick to pick up Callie (I had brought her in because she loved car rides, and I assumed that it would just be a routine checkup - silly me). After talking to Grandma, I had to call Dad to tell him to leave work immediately.
I arrived at the hospital, left my car unlocked (so Grandpa could pick up the dog), and walked into the hospital. It was so surreal. I had no bags or pillows (or anything else they ever recommended at birthing class), and no husband. After checking in, I was taken to the room, given the lovely gown, and asked a barrage of questions. Then I waited. I was waiting for Dad, or the doctor...anyone to interupt the strange experience.
Well, the doctor arrived first. She broke my water around 12:45 pm and left. I waited some more. Dad arrived shortly after 1:00pm and Grandma Sue was not far behind him (that fifteen minute wait seemed like hours). We all thought that we would be there for awhile before things would get active. We were wrong. By 3:15pm my contractions were so painful that I got an epideral, and when they checked I was at an 8. Around 4:30 pm you were ready for your arrival. Sadly, the doctor was not - she was still at the clinic. The nurse called her and she rushed over to the hospital. Dad was watching out the window for her to pull into the lot. At 5:10 pm, you, our darling daughter, were born.
Our lives were forever changed.
Happy 1st Birthday, Sophie Jean. May you keep your warm smile, your determination, and your laughter.
I love you!
Love,
Momma
